Diocletian's Palace

A palace and fortress, Diocletian's Palace was built as a retirement getaway for the emperor. Over the centuries it was abandoned and forgotten, then rediscovered and incorporated into the medieval old town of Split. You can visit the ruins for free, as most of the old town exists inside the palace walls.
